about

I was listening to NPR as I usually do in the car and heard there was a music challenge of sorts where artists could submit a recording using Cornell's recently updated Macaulay Library of hundreds of thousands of animal sounds (some good, some pretty primitive). These recordings go back to the 40s and 50s but obviously the more recent ones use significantly better recording equipment. macaulaylibrary.org

Anyway, the challenge was to use these sounds (at least one), compose a piece and upload/share the track to Studio360's Soundcloud area as part of the challenge by midnight Mon, Mar 18, 2013. I was working on this off and on for about a week, plodding along with various directions nearly put the cherry on top. I realized at 11:20pm that I hadn't converted it and uploaded it! * oh no * I got out from bed and slapped together the mastering. I would have liked it longer and with more ornamentation and layering of course ... I got it uploaded with four minutes to spare. When I listened to other pieces which people uploaded, there were the 'typical' ambient compositions with flowing strings, etc. * blah blah blah* I didn't want to go there, so I started with a groove and sub-bass. There are about 25 different bird songs in the background. It starts out with a fade-in of a massive throng of penguins in Antarctica. I truthfully do not know all the bird names as I was recording them pretty haphazardly from the Cornell's Lab of Ornithology. it's gotten about 2000 streams on Soundcloud ... and I didn't win the competition :-) No worries. The picture I've associated with this track is a Wandering Albatross (I read this bird can fly upwards of 1.5 million miles in its lifetime). Wow, talk about frequent flyer miles.
